“We need each other. Why? Because you can’t give yourself a good haircut.” ~ Seth Godin
We need each other. As human beings, we’re not meant to go it alone. Yet when life gets busy, when we’re stressed out, overworked and stretched just a little too thin we tend to pull our energies in, pare down to what is essential, and just focus on getting through this and getting the next thing done.
That is survival mode. Necessary from time to time, but not sustainable, happy, healthy or whole.
The happiest people in the world are the ones who have fulfilling personal and professional relationships and connections.
They support us, stretch us, help us grow and bring new ideas, thoughts and experiences into our lives…. And that is stimulating! + enriching and life giving.
As the complexity of life increases, and everything just seems to speed up, it’s easy to adopt the habit to focus on only what we want or need to get done…. (guilty over here!) But ultimately that leads to feeling isolated, overworked, and alone. Maybe you know someone like that, or maybe you’re even one of them. The cure really is connection. Reach out – it’ll help you both.
This Week …
Reach out and connect to someone…
Who haven’t you talked to in a while? Who is someone new in your circle that you’ve been meaning to connect with more? Send that text, make the call and take the time to actually meet. Invite someone out to coffee or lunch; it doesn’t have to be a big deal, just connect!
Are you overwhelmed? Who can help? Do you need emotional support? Physical support? Start bringing other people on board where you can. For friendship, guidance or a gentle nudge forward. Hire the person who can help you speed things up, finish better or faster … a trainer, coach, accountant, web expert, painter or decorator. (I have a friend who always hires someone to decorate their home for the holidays… it’s beautiful, and it means more time for family and friends) And know that just the act of asking for help can begin to tame our wild egos and heal our souls.
Buddy Up! Ever thought about an Accountability Partner? Even if you are a super A-Type personality and have no problem getting things done, the simple act of checking in with someone at a set time every week can keep you focused, on track and less alone. And be sure to celebrate your wins! Every week, share your challenges, share your goals and take stock of all the good stuff too 🙂
Few creatures on this planet are meant to go it alone, and as human beings we are not one of them. We need each other. Why? To feel connected, part of something bigger, supported, loved, appreciated, happy and whole…. And to put it very simply…. because you can’t give yourself a good haircut!
